Neptune Head
As a young boy I would cycle miles to collect pieces of the local chalk. Balancing them precariously on the front of the bike to bring them home to carve, so fascinated I was in stone. This fascination has turned into my profession and vocation and for over thirty years I have been providing many different styles and types of carving to a wide variety of customers.
I hope this website will give prospective clients and those just interested in carving a glimpse of the work I have done in the past and can do in the future.
Over the years I have had experience of many different styles and types of carving . I have produced carvings for Chester Cathedral and Oxford Colleges as well as sculptures for Sainsbury’s in Wrexham and Chester City Council.
I have carved Architectural carvings for St. Mary’s Church Nantwich and St. Peter’s Ruthin.
I have made figurative sculptures for St. Giles Church, Wrexham and for Lord McAlpine for West Green House in Hampshire. I have worked on and provided carvings for The Carfax Conduit, an elaborate carved water fountain once found in the centre of the City of Oxford now erected by the River Thames at Nuneham Courtney.
Now based at a well equiped modern workshop I have created Heraldic sculptures for Sir Michael Heseltine for Banbury and Lord Langford for Bodrhyddan hall near Dyserth, Denbighshire. I have made a lettered plaque for Denbighshire County Council for the opening of the new pavillion at the Llangollen Music Eisteddford to be unveiled by The Queen as well as plaques for The Maelor Hospital in Wrexham and Theatre Clwyd in Mold Flintshire.
An important part of my work is making unique Headstones where the object is to celebrate the deceased and comfort the living. I have connections with local monumental masons. I work only in British sandstones and Slate. I often provide a drawing or design for a prospective client. I can create either full size Headstones or smaller Cremation Plaques. I can create almost any style of lettering and often gild the letters with Gold Leaf.
I also make unique fireplaces for private clients, the object of which is to enhance the room it is to be placed in. The challenge often for me is to match the fireplace to the period home it is designed for. The fire surrounds can be made to fit any type of fire, from open log burners to gas fires to modern enclosed multi-fuel burners.
Julie Winter has created a large modern Sculpture for St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Holyhead in sandstone for outside the main doors. She also has renovated Headstones-Re-painting and re-lettering them for private clients as well as a whole burial ground at St. Beuno’s Jesuit Retreat Centre, Tremerchion, Denbighshire.
